Position Summary
The Full-Time Summer Camp STEAM Specialist is responsible for designing and leading engaging, hands-on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Cooking and Mathematics) programming for campers. Under the supervision of the Camp Coordinator, this position fosters creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving skills while ensuring a safe, inclusive, and structured learning environment.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Program Development & Implementation
• Design and implement a comprehensive, age-appropriate STEAM curriculum for multiple age groups.
• Lead daily hands-on activities such as simple engineering challenges, coding basics, robotics, science experiments, art integration projects, and nature-based STEAM exploration.
• Adapt lessons to accommodate varying skill levels and learning styles.
• Organize themed STEAM days, collaborative group projects, and end-of-session showcases.
Camper Engagement & Instruction
• Create a positive, inclusive learning environment that encourages curiosity and creativity.
• Provide clear instruction and demonstrations for experiments and projects.
• Promote teamwork and respectful collaboration among campers.
• Support campers in problem-solving and independent thinking.
Safety & Equipment Management
• Ensure safe use of tools, materials, and technology.
• Maintain clean and organized STEAM workspace areas.
• Monitor and inventory supplies, materials, and equipment.
• Follow all safety guidelines related to experiments and project materials.
Collaboration & Communication
• Coordinate with Camp Coordinators and Counselors to integrate STEAM into overall camp programming.
• Communicate supply needs and program updates to camp leadership.
• Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and planning discussions.
• Share highlights and project outcomes with families when appropriate.
• Required to cover lunch breaks daily.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
• Background in education, science, engineering, technology, art, or a related field preferred.
• Experience working with children in a camp, classroom, or youth program setting required.
• Experience developing lesson plans or curriculum preferred.
Certifications
• CPR, First Aid, and AED certification (or willingness to obtain prior to camp start).
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
• Strong knowledge of age-appropriate STEAM concepts and project-based learning.
• Ability to make complex concepts accessible and engaging for youth.
• Excellent classroom/group management skills.
• Strong organizational and planning abilities.
• Ability to foster creativity while maintaining structure and safety.
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
Schedule & Work Environment
• Full-time, seasonal summer position.
• Combination of indoor classroom-style space and outdoor activities.
• Frequent standing, walking, and hands-on activity participation.
• Ability to lift and carry materials and equipment up to 25 pounds.
Employment Requirements
• Successful completion of a criminal background check.
• Availability for required pre-camp training and the full duration of the summer camp program.
