Job Title: Lead Summer Camp Counselor
Department: Parks & Recreation
Reports To: Youth Program Manager
Classification: Non-Exempt (Summer Seasonal June 30th-August 22nd Mon-Fri 8:30am-3:30pm)

 

Job Description: 

The Lead Summer Camp Counselor is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the camp, ensuring the safety, well-being, and enjoyment of all campers. The Head Counselor will manage a team of counselors, provide leadership and guidance, and serve as the main point of contact for campers, parents, and camp staff. This role requires strong leadership skills, experience working with children, and the ability to create a positive, inclusive, fun camp environment.

 

1. Leadership & Supervision:

a. Supervise and mentor a team of counselors, ensuring they are effectively engaging campers and maintaining camp standards.
b. Provide direction, support, and feedback to counselors, ensuring high levels of performance and professionalism.
c. Lead team meetings and debriefs to ensure communication and alignment on camp activities and camper needs.

 

2. Camper Care & Engagement:

a. Foster a positive and inclusive camp environment, promoting teamwork, friendship, and respect among campers.
b. Address and resolve any issues related to camper behavior, ensuring that every child has a safe, enjoyable experience.
c. Lead and actively participate in camp activities, including arts & crafts, sports, games, and team-building exercises.
d. Ensure that campers' physical and emotional needs are met, providing individual attention when necessary.

 

3. Program Development & Implementation:

a. Work with Youth Program Manager and other counselors to plan and implement daily activities, ensuring they are engaging, age-appropriate, and safe. 
b. Help set up for camp activities, ensuring all necessary materials and equipment are prepared and available.
c. Maintain flexible and adaptive strategies to meet the needs and interests of all campers.

 

4. Safety & Supervision:

a. Monitor the safety of campers at all times, ensuring proper supervision during activities, transitions, and breaks.
b. Ensure that all safety protocols and emergency procedures are followed.
c. Administer first aid as necessary, in line with camp policy.

5. Communication:

a. Serve as the primary contact for parents or guardians regarding their child’s camp experience, providing regular updates as needed.
b. Maintain open communication with camp staff and leadership to report on camper progress, challenges, and achievements.
c. Assist with camper check-in and check-out, ensuring smooth transitions at the beginning and end of each camp day.

 

6. Administrative Tasks:

a. Assist with camp registration, record-keeping, and other administrative duties as needed.
b. Ensure that all camp documentation (attendance, incident reports, etc.) is completed accurately and in a timely manner.

 

7. Other Duties as Assigned:

a. Assist with camp opening and closing, ensuring all necessary tasks are completed for the smooth operation of the camp.
b. Participate in staff training and development sessions before the camp begins.

 

Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent (some college coursework preferred).
Previous experience working with children in a camp or recreational setting (at least 1 year of experience).
Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to motivate and guide a team of counselors.
CPR and First Aid certification Medication Administration certification (or willingness to obtain prior to camp).
Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment while maintaining a positive and professional attitude.
Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to manage conflicts in a constructive manner.
Passion for working with children and helping them develop new skills and experiences.

 

Physical Requirements:

Ability to actively participate in physical activities and outdoor games.
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and assist campers with various physical tasks.
Ability to work in varying weather conditions, including heat, rain, and direct sunlight.

 

Work Environment:

Full-time, seasonal position during summer months (June through August).
Must be available for extended hours, including early mornings and evenings.
