        Monday, Wed. & Friday 8:00AM-3:00PM
      Tuesday & Thursday 10:00AM-6:00PM

 

Position Summary

The Assistant Camp Coordinator supports the Camp Coordinator in the daily operations of the Town of Bethany Parks & Recreation Summer Camp Program. This position plays a key leadership role in supervising camp staff, supporting camper programming, and directly overseeing the Counselor-in-Training (CIT) Program. The Assistant Camp Coordinator helps ensure a safe, engaging, and inclusive environment while mentoring future camp leaders.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Camp Operations Support

Assist in planning and implementing daily camp schedules and special events.
Create and implement curriculum for camp activities including sports, arts & crafts, STEM, nature exploration, and trips to Veterans Park.
Help maintain smooth daily transitions, staff coverage, and group supervision.
Step in as needed to support counselors and camper groups.
Oversee before and after care when scheduled.

 

Staff Support & Supervision

Assist with supervising Camp Counselors, Junior Counselors, and seasonal staff.
Provide guidance, coaching, and constructive feedback.
Help facilitate staff meetings and pre-camp training sessions.
Model professionalism, teamwork, and positive youth engagement.
Direct supervision of Counselor-in-Training (CIT) participants.
Supportive supervision of Camp Counselors and Junior Counselors

CIT Program Oversight

Program Development & Implementation

Develop and implement a structured Counselor-in-Training (CIT) curriculum focused on leadership development, responsibility, teamwork, and child development.
Create weekly leadership workshops, team-building activities, field trips and skill-building sessions.
Assign CITs to camper groups and rotate placements to provide varied experiences.

Mentorship & Evaluation

Supervise and mentor all CIT participants.
Provide regular feedback and performance evaluations.
Teach and reinforce camp policies, safety procedures, and professional expectations.
Serve as primary point of contact for CIT parents/guardians.

 

Leadership Development

Foster responsibility, accountability, and role-model behavior among CITs.
Provide opportunities for CITs to lead activities under supervision.
Support conflict resolution and problem-solving skill development.

Camper Safety & Wellbeing

Help maintain a safe, structured, and inclusive camp environment.
Ensure health and safety policies are followed at all times.
Assist in responding to behavioral concerns, incidents, and accidents, including documentation.
Maintain confidentiality of camper and staff information.

Administrative Responsibilities

Maintain attendance and CIT participation records.
Assist with supply inventory and program organization.
Communicate regularly with the Camp Coordinator regarding program needs and concerns.
Contribute to end-of-summer reports and program evaluations.

 

Qualifications

Education & Experience

Experience working with children in a camp, school, or recreation setting required.
Previous leadership or supervisory experience preferred.
Experience mentoring teens strongly preferred.
Current CPR, First Aid, Epi Pen Admin, and AED certification (or ability to obtain prior to camp start).

Knowledge of youth development and age-appropriate programming.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.
Strong organizational and problem-solving abilities.
Ability to maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

Primarily outdoor work in summer weather conditions.
Active participation in games, activities, and field trips.
Ability to lift and carry supplies up to 25–30 pounds.
Moderate to loud noise levels typical of youth recreation programs.

Employment Requirements

Successful completion of a criminal background check.
Valid driver’s license (if required for program needs).
Availability for full summer season, including pre-camp training.
